Human Rights: Not just legal jargon: but Everyday Life

The term Human Rights may make us think of legal documents, people facing torture abroad or courtroom drama, but Human Rights are much more than that – they belong to all of us.

Human rights are about what matters most in our lives, having a voice in decisions, being treated with dignity and respect, safety and being included and having the same opportunities as others to thrive.

They are especially important for people facing discrimination, exclusion, inequality, or barriers to having their voices heard. Knowing your rights can help you have choice and control over your life.

A Human-Rights based approach matters

Very often systems and processes are frustrating, disempowering and complicated. Even when organisations and people are trying to help, policies and procedures can create barriers which have a negative impact on people’s experience.

Having a human rights -based approach encourages us to stop and ask an important questions:

“How can be put people back at the centre of the work we do?”

Refocusing on rights allows us to shift from seeing people as recipients of services to individuals with their own power, choices, expertise and strengths and rights to shape decisions which affect them.

Introducing the Human Rights Community of Practice

The Human Rights Community of Practice will bring together a diverse community of people to foster and develop their commitment to making human rights meaningful in our communities. It will consist of people with lived experience, frontline practitioners and workers, professionals, community groups and stakeholders. Every perspective is important and we will recognise that lived experience is invaluable.

The Community of Practice will enable a safe, supportive and collaborative space where those involved learn from each other and share their experience as we strengthen rights-based practice across Fife.

 What We Plan to Achieve

Together, we want to impact Fife to become somewhere that human rights can flourish in practice, not just in principle.

We will:

✅ Build a shared understanding of human rights and what they mean in everyday life

✅ Strengthen connections between diverse communities in Fife, recognising that human rights are not only about my rights but our rights

✅ Develop practical tools, resources and approaches so that rights-based working can improve life for everyone in Fife.

Working Together for Change

The Human Rights Community of Practice is an opportunity to create a culture where human rights are understood, valued, and actively upheld. We cannot do this alone, it is work we can do together by sharing ideas, knowledge and placing lived experience at the heart of the conversation. Together we will ensure human rights move beyond theory and into shaping everyday lives. Human rights are not just legal ideals, they are about people, relationships, dignity and individuals having a voice and control. Come and join the Community of Practice to make change happen.
